“Selectable Output Control”

by Scott on August 5, 2008

“Selectable Output Control” is the term describing a DRM methodology that prohibits DRM’ed media from outputting on certain devices, or even on specific outputs of a device. Currently banned by the FCC, the MPAA is lobbying to lift the ban in a move to distribute day-and-date movie releases via VOD. This would effectively disable the analog outputs on devices, and most likely prohibit DVR’ing of these “first-run” releases. Tech Liberation Front has more info and discussion.
