“Selectable Output Control”

by Scott on August 5, 2008

“Selectable Output Control” is the term describing a DRM methodology that prohibits DRM’ed media from outputting on certain devices, or even on specific outputs of a device. Currently banned by the FCC, the MPAA is lobbying to lift the ban in a move to distribute day-and-date movie releases via VOD. This would effectively disable the analog outputs on devices, and most likely prohibit DVR’ing of these “first-run” releases. Tech Liberation Front has more info and discussion.

Guernica in 3D

by Scott on August 2, 2008

An incredible 3D interpretation of Picasso’s Guernica. Beautiful soundtrack:

The song Nana is part of Manuel de Falla’s Siete canciones populares españolas, arranged by Ana Ruth Bermúdez and Rene Izquierdo for cello and guitar. De Falla wrote the suite 1908-09 and Nana is based on a traditional lullaby from Andalusia in Spain, the region Manuel de Falla was born in 1876. De Falla became internationally recognized during his career and worked in 1919 even with Picasso. Picasso designed the set and costumes for de Falla’s El sombrero de tres picos, which premiered with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes at the Alhambra Theatre in London.

The Next Netflix Settop—Bluray+Streaming

by Scott on July 31, 2008

Netflix has announced a combo Blu-ray+networked settop. The LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, will be available in September, for under $500. No word on whether the “networked” part means support for BD-Live. Paidcontent also notes:

The LG deal is non-exclusive, meaning LG can add more services from competitors down the line, though nothing has been planned yet.
