AACS (Blu-ray DRM scheme/consortium) has reduced it’s licensing fees, offering relief to potential producers of small-run/micro-indie titles. Per-disc licensing fees for small, first-time runs (1000-2000) are around $1/disc. Still kinda steep, but we’ll see if it helps. Numbers, news and notes (alliteration alert) after Netflix’s incredible Q4 results. (Some analysis at SAI.) PaidContent:

The Next Netflix Settop—Bluray+Streaming

Netflix has announced a combo Blu-ray+networked settop. The LG BD300 Network Blu-ray Disc Player, will be available in September, for under $500. No word on whether the “networked” part means support for BD-Live. Paidcontent also notes:

Besides the limited (or outrageously expensive) production tools available to non-studios for producing Blu-ray discs, the Finishing Line breaks down the costs for developing your first project:
_$2,500 : License Fee to author and distribute Blu-ray
_$3,000 : One-time fee to AACS. (I think this is billed per production company / individual)
_$1,585 : Per complete Blu-ray project
