Radio Remixed

by Scott on December 10, 2007

A couple of interesting Radio/Music/Interweb mashups—

The Pirate Bay has launched a music discovery section, utilizing LastFM data. Probably could use a decent interface, but a nice idea.

KEXP in Seattle has launched Kexplorer, a music discovery/sharing app built around it’s program stream. Kexplorer allows you to tag songs while listening to the stream, and allows you to retrieve song/artist info via SMS. More info at Programmable Web.

Also, check out these 36 LastFM Mashups.

Downloadable: Pauline Oliveros

by Scott on September 26, 2007

Early electronic works from the pioneering American composer at Different Waters.

Pauline Oliveros: Electronic Works

Wikipedia:

A central figure in post-war electronic art music, Oliveros is one of the original members of the San Francisco Tape Music Center , which was the resource on the U.S. west coast for electronic music during the 1960s. The Center later moved to Mills College, where she was its first director, and is now called the Center for Contemporary Music. Oliveros often improvises with the Expanded Instrument System, an electronic signal processing system she designed, in her performances and recordings.
Oliveros coined the term “Deep Listening”, which she then applied to her group The Deep Listening Band and to the Deep Listening program of Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. (formerly The Pauline Oliveros Foundation), which she founded in 1985. The Deep Listening program includes annual listening retreats in Europe, New Mexico and in upstate New York, as well as apprenticeship and certification programs. The Deep Listening Band, which includes Oliveros, David Gamper, and Stuart Dempster, specializes in performing and recording in resonant or reverberant spaces such as caves, cathedrals and huge underground cisterns. They have collaborated with Ellen Fullman and her Long String Instrument, as well as countless other musicians, dancers, and performers.

Notes On The Amazon Music Store Beta

by Scott on September 25, 2007

Notes on the public beta of the Amazon Digital Music Store

_They’ve gone out of their way to make it as x-platform as possible-even a Linux version on the way.

_Automatically adds downloaded tracks to a user’s iTunes or Windows Media Player library

_No re-downloading.

_The user interface needs some(much) work. While your at it, do the whole Amazon site. K, thx.

_Need to use the download client to download whole albums.

_Imagine mashing some LastFM data or some such for recommendations and filtering. I can see lots of cool stuff on the horizon utilizing Amazon’s web services. How about a customizable/embed/sharable Flash UI/widget to the store for bands/labels? Or how about something like that for Amazon Affiliates? A widget like this could also possibly power a “mobile/wireless” store.

_The big question: WILL THIS WORK ON AN IPHONE?

no.

The site let me go through the entire purchasing process (including payment) w/o warning or re-directing me about using an iPhone. (I did get a popup on the Amazon home page with a link to the “beta” Amazon iPhone site.)

Poor usability/contingency design.

Tokyo Noise (torrent)

Tokyo Noise is an exciting audiovisual dive into the cacophonic waters of urban Japan. Three Swedish documentary makers drag us into a world characterized by noise in all possible forms, and during the trip a plethora of themes are subjects for speculation: robots, shintoism, love hotels, the ethical guidelines for a photo club specializing in Mount Fuji. All of this is presented by a handful of people as eccentric photographers, noise artists, shinto priests, doctors, game designers and more.
[...]
The eclectic soundtrack was composed, performed, and compiled by Johan Söderberg and Zbigniew Karkowski, known for his work in The Hafler Trio.

The docu-like movie follows several characters involved in selling or buying illegal discs. and looks at the pervasive influence pirated DVDs have on these “ordinary” people in Beijing.

Apple launches myItunes: iTunes widgets.

by Scott on August 10, 2007

A little late to the ball game, but Apple has rolled out some widgets that allow users to post things like their recent iTunes purchases or their iTunes “ratings” to blogs and social-network sites. Official Datastream grade: B-, for plain, but not garish, design and somewhat limited functionality/options. Feature Request: an Audioscrobbler-like plugin that 1. works and 2. grabs real-time iTunes data. Something like this or this.
